Triggs to face questions over QUT 18c case

Forget Mohammed Ali’s Rumble in the Jungle, this is a showdown worth watching!

Human Rights Commission president Gillian Triggs is set for a showdown with government MPs on Friday over a controversial case at the centre of a push to overhaul Australia’s racial discrimination laws.

The commission confirmed on Thursday it would not use public interest immunity provisions to avoid answering questions about how it handled a complaint brought against three Queensland University of Technology students.

A few things I’d like to know:

  1. On what basis does the AHRC claim to have handled the QUT case in an unbiased manner, or in accordance with any norm of mediation, given they did not inform one of the parties that there were proceedings against them for months?
  2. In what material way does the AHRC’s ‘mediation’ differ from extortion, given the demands for ‘go away money’ from the accused on behalf of the allegedly aggrieved in the QUT case?
  3. How does the AHRC justify its claims to be a mediator, whilst behaving materially as an advocacy / activist organisation on behalf of specific subsections of Australian Society?
  4. What changes will the AHRC make to internal policies in response to the obvious failings in the handling of the QUT case?

Now I have no issue with advocacy organisations, even ones who only act on behalf of a specific group of people, and not on behalf of others. Privately owned and funded organisations can be as racist / sexist / bigoted / biased as they like. (and make no mistake the AHRC is all of those things and more) But I have a HUGE issue with such an organisation being publicly funded, and with them being given such intimidating powers as the AHRC have.

I look forward to videos coming out of this hearing, and hope this goes a long way to not only abolishing 18c, but maybe even the AHRC as well.
