Bans and Taxes are a criminals best friend

Right into the ‘who saw this coming?’ basket goes this article in The Age about how increased tobacco taxes are fueling the smuggling industry and organised crime gangs:

Attracted by the huge revenue streams and lesser penalties applied to those caught tobacco smuggling, organised criminals have moved into the illicit trade, using the proceeds to pay for other criminal activities.

Wow, who knew? Oh, wait… that would be me.

Bans and tax hikes are always great news for organised criminals. We saw it with the prohibition in the ’30s, we’ve seen it again with the ‘war on drugs’ in the US and elsewhere since the 80s, and we’re seeing it again now with tobacco.

But what’s even less surprising than that bans and taxes fuel crime, is that politicians still haven’t learned this most basic lesson of human behavior.
