John Cleese has been more willing than most to defy the suffocating group-think of the left and the ‘arts world’, and has become a vocal and high profile advocate of freedom of speech.

I’ve come across this video before, but I don’t believe I posted it. It’s time to remedy that.

Do yourself a favor and watch it. It’s heartening to hear someone with such profile taking a stand on an issue so important. I’m much more accustomed to finding ‘celebrities’ (whatever that word means these days) constantly advocating for more government intervention, more regulation, more rules, more taxes, more ‘justice’ (another nigh-on-meaningless word these days) and more of everything that’s wrong with this planet. So watch it if only to discover a refreshing change from the norm. To hear a famous person who thinks you can actually be trusted with your own voice, your own ideas, your own opinions, and that you should be allowed to express them.

And finally, remember that this current battle for freedom of speech can be won, as it has been won in many generations before us. But it won’t be won if we’re all too easily silenced or if we care too much about the opinions of those who are too easily offended. The speeches you make in defence of freedom of speech will be regarded as offensive by some. That is as is must be. And we must speak out anyway.
