Licenced to tow?

Straight from the ‘you can’t be serious’ files comes this apparently absolutely serious suggestion... special licences to tow trailers.

Let’s clear up a few misconceptions from this article:

  1. ‘Inexperienced’ drivers are not towing caravans. L plate and P plate drivers are banned from towing anything at all, and the drivers the author seems most worried about are actually among the most experienced on the road.
  2. The author has a nigh-on-unbelievably condescending attitude towards older drivers and retirees.
  3. There are already strict conditions on the size and weight of what you can tow with a normal car licence.
  4. By the authors logic we should perhaps have different licences for large vehicles like SUVs than we do for hatchbacks…

No, no, and a thousand times no. This is the problem with this country! Every little thing that irritates us seems to be an excuse to go sooking to Mummy Government and dobbing on each other.

Yes there are some bad drivers out there, and tragic things happen on the roads. But actually we’re safer than we’ve ever been in HUMAN HISTORY on the road today. You were far more likely to be killed while traveling backing in the low-speed days of horses and buggies than you are in the high-speed modern world. Ever seen a horse spook and run through a crowd? Or a heavy wagon overrun the horse or donkey trying to keep it under control down a steep hill? Neither have I, but these used to be regular(ish) events on the road and people used to be killed by these and many other mishaps on a regular basis. That’s not to say we shouldn’t look for ways to make our roads even safer, but lets keep things in perspective here…

If someone is driving badly, they should be dealt with individually. Don’t punish the rest of us with extra fees, tests, and red tape, just because a minority of people don’t know their limits.

Sure, this is just a ‘minor issue’ and may not affect you in any way, but we need to stand up for principles of freedom, less regulation, and greater personal choice with personal responsibility, every chance we get.
